This shirt was worn by John Giles in the international match against Scotland on September 21st 1969 at Dalymount Park. It is a green, woollen, long-sleeved jersey with the number 8 sewn onto the reverse. I won the shirt at an auction held by Christie's of London in November 2005. The shirt came from a lady whose uncle had worked at Leeds United during the 1960s and 1970s. Giles swapped shirts with Leeds United's Billy Bremner and Bremner gave the shirt to this lady's uncle. Remarkably the shirt is still unwashed and has been kept in very good condition over the years. It is made from wool and - because it has not been washed - has not shrunk like so many woollen jerseys from the 1960s / 1970s. There are some faint stains on the shirt from the Dalymount pitch and what appears to be a small blood stain on the front of the shirt. I have managed to check the official match programme from the game (see below for a scan of the actual programme itself) and the Number 8 shirt was definately worn by Giles and not by any other Irish player so there is absolutely no question that this is a John Giles match worn shirt.
