This shirt is one of Ronnie Whelan's Match Shirts from the European Championships Finals of 1988, played in West Germany. I do not believe that it was worn in any of Ireland's three matches. However, I am certain that it was issued to him for that particular competition. Whelan was one of Ireland's stars of Euro '88, scoring one of the goals of the tournament against the USSR in a memorable 1-1 draw. The 1988 European Championships Finals was the first time that Ireland had qualified for the finals of a major tournament; they beat England 1-0 in their opening match before drawing with the USSR and then finally losing to the eventual winners, Holland.
