This is the shirt that was worn by Mick McCarthy in the international friendly played against Wales in Dublin on March 26th 1986. It is a green, home, short-sleeved shirt with the Number 17 on the back. I obtained the shirt from an ex-Wales international who played in the match and swapped shirts with McCarthy on the field at the final whistle. Records show that McCarthy, who was a late addition to the Ireland squad, came on as a substitute and wore the Number 17 shirt.
Fans will know that this match was of massive significance for Irish football because it was Jack Charlton's first game in charge of the Ireland team. Charlton would go on to become the most successful manager of Ireland to date and take the team to three major Championship Finals.
