This shirt was worn by Jason McAteer during Ireland's unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the 1998 World Cup Finals. It was recently auctioned at Sothebys and was named as a Jason McAteer shirt in their catalogue. Furthermore, the shirt has been signed on the front by McAteer who has added "Best Wishes" by his signiture.
Regrettably, I have been unable to identify which match McAteer wore this shirt in. There are two photos shown below; the first shows him wearing a very similar shirt, that is only different because it has long-sleeves. The other shows him wearing a short-sleeved shirt which is identical to this one. McAteer was allocated the Number 10 shirt on a few occasions during this period which is why it is difficult to identify exactly which match it has come from.
There are several mud stains on the shirt which is why I am confident that it is a match worn shirt rather than a match issued shirt. The Umbro logo on this shirt is fully embroidered into the shirt's fabric; on replica shirts it would have been printed on instead. The absence of the Opel sponsor across the front of the shirt is another important indicator that the shirt is a genuine players shirt and not a replica shirt
