This shirt was issued to midfielder Stephen Hunt for Ireland's historic fixture in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales on March 24th 2007. It is a green, home, long sleeved shirt and has not been signed. The match was historic because it was the first football / soccer match ever to be played at Croke Park - the home of the Gaelic Athletic Association. To some people outside of Ireland this might not seem such a big deal but to those who know and understand the history of Irish sport, and the history of Ireland as a country, this match was very historic. A brief overview of Croke Park's history can be viewed here. Ireland won the match 1-0 with a goal from Stephen Ireland.
This shirt is one of Stephen Hunt's unworn spares; it is not his match worn shirt. Hunt came on as a substitute but wore a short-sleeved shirt. Hunt swapped this shirt with a player in the Welsh squad after the match. In July 2007 this shirt was auctioned (along with a few other international shirts that had been gained as swaps by that Welsh player). I was fortunate enough to win the auction. The shirt differs from replica shirts because there is no sponsor's logo on the front: all Ireland replica shirts from 1992 onwards had a sponsor logo written on the front; shirts without a sponsor logo could not be bought in shops from this period onwards.
